What's On

Poetry Ireland Éigse Éireann Border Crossings Project

"Now I'm not afraid to let
my imagination
grab my pen"

The Border Crossings Project is made possible through lottery funding support from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. The project offers the opportunity to apply for funding for a one-off visit, or residency by a writer or storyteller to primary and post-primary schools in the ten counties on either side of the border: Armagh, Cavan, Derry Donegal, Down, Fermanagh, Leitrim, Louth, Monaghan, and Tyrone. We are now taking applications for the Border Crossings visits and residencies, which will take place between September 2010 and April 2011.

One-Off Visits

  • Duration: two and a half hours
  • Cost to the school is €50/ ₤44.50
  • Visits can be divided into separate group sessions ie three 45-minute sessions with different class groups/ age levels.

If you would like to apply for funding for a Border Crossings one-off visit, please click here: One-off visit

Deadline for applications: 1 July 2010.
Applications will be decided on a first-come-first served basis.

Once a school secures funding, the WIS office will help the school decide on the most suitable writer for their requirements.

Residencies

  • Duration: 1.5 hour visit per week for eight weeks, within school term.
  • Cost:  €330.00/ ₤295.00
  • Maximum 30 primary students and 15-20 post-primary students will be allowed.
  • Continuous involvement of one key teacher

An important element of the Border Crossings residency programme is that schools are twinned with a partner school on the other side of the border, and an exchange of work will take place via the writers. Twinned schools will be encouraged where possible to organize a local event, where there will be a reading/performance by participants hosted by one of the schools.
