Poetry Day Ireland and Butlers Poetry Competition for Children

Do you dream of seeing the inside of a real chocolate factory? Would you love to have your poem on display in every single Butlers Chocolate Café? Then Poetry Ireland and Butlers Chocolates have just the competition for you! Write your own chocolate-flavoured poem and you could win a trip for your family and friends to the Butlers Chocolate Experience and a night in The Croke Park, a Doyle Collection hotel.

To celebrate Poetry Day Ireland on Thursday 27 April 2017, Poetry Ireland and Butlers Chocolates are calling on young writers to write a poem inspired by chocolate or the Butlers Chocolate Experience for a very special poetry competition.

If you're aged between 5 and 12, then it's time to get writing! Up to two winning poems will be printed on pocket-sized poem cards, which will be in all 19 Irish branches of Butlers Chocolate Cafés on Poetry Day Ireland this year.

The overall lucky winner will also get family pass for the Butlers Chocolate Experience plus a night in a family room for 4 people, plus breakfast in The Croke Park hotel in Dublin’s City Centre. During your visit to the Butlers Chocolate Experience you’ll get to see how all the award winning, delicious chocolates are created at the Butlers Chocolate factory, before having a go at making some chocolate treats for yourself.

Three runners up will recieve a delicious box of Butlers Chocolates.

*A family pass for 4 people, must include one adult. Prize-winners must make their own transport arrangements as they are not included as part of the competition prize.

Top Tip!

Don't forget that your poem needs to be a "Chocolate Poem". This means that it can be about chocolate, or it could also be about something else, but mention chocolate in it.

Before you sit down to write, you might like to think about the following things, which could help you to write your poem:

  • When do you eat chocolate?

  • How do you feel when you see a bar of chocolate?

  • What does the wrapper look like?

  • What happens when you start to unwrap the chocolate?

  • What does the chocolate look like?

  • What does chocolate smell like?

  • What does chocolate taste like?

  • Where do you like to enjoy chocolate?

  • How does eating chocolate make you feel?

  • When do you eat chocolate?

Thinking about these questions might help you to write your poem. But don't stop there – let your imagination take your poem somewhere magical!
