Seamus Heaney (1939 – 2013)

Poetry Ireland/Éigse Éireann deeply regrets the death of Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney. We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Marie and to his children Christopher, Michael and Catherine Ann and to his wide circle of family and friends.

Seamus was an exceptional friend to Poetry Ireland and an extraordinarily generous supporter of our work in a wide number of ways.  A towering presence in the world of poetry, Seamus will also be fondly remembered for his immense humanity, his humility and his extraordinary generosity of spirit.  Throughout his life, he was a supreme ambassador for Ireland, and for literature and poetry, and his loss to Irish life and letters is immeasurable.  He was to the forefront in making poetry an essential part of Irish life.  His presence will be profoundly missed but the vitality of his spirit will live on through his brilliant work.  He leaves us an extraordinary legacy.
