An Evening of Poetry and Song

Poetry Ireland and Wicklow County Council present Gallery Press poets David Wheatley, Gerald Dawe and Alan Gillis: three of Ireland’s leading poets reading from recent work, joined by Grammy award-winning vocalist and songwriter Susan McKeown. Bray native David Wheatley will read alongside Gerald Dawe, whose new collection Mickey Finn's Air will be released later this month, and Belfast poet Alan Gillis, whose work has been shortlisted for the TS Eliot Prize.  Exquisite poems interspersed with powerful songs from Susan promise to make an unforgettable evening at Mermaid.

LINGO Festival: Polarbear and Abby Oliveira

‘Hip-Hop roots combined with the day-to-day sentiment of a man trying to figure things out’. Polarbear is one of the England's best known performance poets and a favourite on the Irish scene. Performances at Glastonbury, OneTaste, Electric Picnic and Jazz Café, as well as a UK tour in 2006, have built up his reputation as a storyteller for the twenty-first century.

Joining Polarbear will be the life-affirming and energetic Abby Oliveira. A performance poet based in Derry, Abby was Belfast Poetry Slam champ in 2006, finalist in the BBC4 Slam 2009, finalist in the Glastonbury Festival Poetry Slam 2009, the Ulster Slam champ in 2010, finalist in All-Ireland Slam 2010, host of the ‘Poetry and Words’ venue at the Glastonbury Festival 2010, and host of the 2011 All-Ireland Poetry Slam final.

Irish language poet Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill will join local school children who have been exploring the Irish language as part of their participation in Poetry Ireland's Writers in Schools workshops. This event, presented in association with the Seamus Heaney Centre, will also see Nuala reading some of her best-loved poems in Irish, with English translations read by Stephen Connolly, Manuela Moser, Nathaniel McAuley and Emma Must, students from the Heaney Centre.
