Applicants should note that literary criteria fulfil only one element of the recruitment procedure for Writers in Schools. Due to budgetary restraints, the costs of the induction and training programme for writers, and our commitment to ensuring that we can offer schools the types of visits they are seeking and artists with the necessary skills/experience, eligible artists may not be successful in their application or have to wait some time before being invited to an interview.

Professional Development and Mentoring

We now deliver a comprehensive professional development and support programme for successful applicants before they are enlisted to our directory of writers. All applicants must now commit to the following recruitment procedures are based on Writers in Schools Guidelines for the Protection & Welfare of Children & Young People in the Arts Sector:

  • Attend an interview
  • Undergo a mentoring training programme. This programme involves the writer shadowing and receiving feedback and advice from one of a group of mentors, who have extensive experience of working with Writers in Schools.
  • Agree to Garda vetting
  • Commit to a professional development/training seminar
