14th year of the poetry speaking competition for post-primary schools
Poetry Aloud is calling on post-primary school teachers across Ireland to get their students involved in the Poetry Aloud 2019 Competition.
Entries are now open for the competition which is the only one of its kind In Ireland. Students throughout the island commit poems to memory and then speak the poems aloud at heats, regional finals and at a national final that takes place each December at the National Library of Ireland.
The competition, which takes place annually, is organised by Poetry Ireland and the National Library of Ireland with support from University College Cork (UCC), which became a 10-year partner for the competition in June 2018. UCC has a very rich connection with poetry with a tradition of stellar poets emerging from the university and contemporary poets on teaching staff, cultivating the next generation of poets.
Moira Cardiff, Poetry Aloud Co-ordinator at Poetry Ireland, said it was encouraging that so many teachers have engaged with the competition on behalf of their students over the years.
“We have had so much support from teachers who’ve introduced the competition to their students and we hope to continue this again in 2019 with even more teachers becoming aware of the competition,” she said.
“Since it launched as a national programme in 2006, Poetry Aloud has grown from just a few hundred entries to more than 1,700 in 2018. We’re really looking forward to receiving all the applications this year and going back on the road around the island of Ireland for the regional heats.”
Poetry Aloud introduces students to a wide range of poetry in a supportive and generous atmosphere. Over the years, many thousands of students have taken part in the competition, helping them not only with their understanding of poetry but contributing to personal growth and self-esteem.
Many past participants have gone on to perform on Ireland’s national airwaves and as part of flagship events such as Celebrating Seamus Heaney at the National Concert Hall.
Poetry Aloud was featured in a special programme on RTÉ lyric FM earlier this year, which will be repeated on Sunday 6 October at 6pm.
