There will be time without measure
A collaborative poem for Poetry Day Ireland 2020. A Poetry Ireland Online Project for 5th and 6th classes
Editor: Seamus Cashman
First and last lines are written by the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins
This is a collaborative work with some 300 participants all contributing their lines in response to the first line of the poem. The final text is arranged and structured, with minimalist textual edits, by the poet Seamus Cashman, who comments:
"These young writers’ imaginative, perceptive and intelligent poetic lines, and rhymes, offer Ireland real hope for and trust in its future potential. I congratulate their willingness to respond to our President’s challenging opening line, and am proud to have assisted in completing this work for them."
You can read the full poem here.
And you can listen to three audio clips of extracts from the poem, read by Senan Flannery, a sixth class student from Dublin.
And the editor, Seamus Cashman, has recorded an extract also.
Thanks to everyone who took part and to the President of Ireland for composing the first and final lines. It's been a wonderful initiative that has encouraged children to engage with poetry.
