Two New Irish language Education Programmes for Post-Primary Schools

8th September 2022

English language Press Release:

Bringing life to the written and spoken Irish language for post-primary schools.

In collaboration with IMRAM, Poetry Ireland has launched two exciting new initiatives that aim to bring life to the Irish language as part of the post-primary school programme.  Guth na hÉigse, is an Irish language pilot Poetry Speaking Competition and Duais Bashō Haiku Poetry Competition, is an English and Irish language haiku competition. With entries now open, Poetry Ireland and IMRAM are calling on all post-primary school teachers to get their students involved.

Guth na hÉigse is a pilot Poetry Speaking Competition for Post-Primary Schools, based on the successful and well-established Poetry Aloud Poetry Speaking Competition initiated by the National Library of Ireland and Poetry Ireland in 2007. Guth na hÉigse aims to encourage students throughout the island of Ireland to commit Irish language poems to memory and then speak the poems aloud at heats, regional finals and at a national final that takes place in November as part of IMRAM Féile Litríochta Gaeilge 2022.

Liam Carson, Director of IMRAM Féile Litríochta Gaeilge 2022 said, “We are delighted to work with Poetry Ireland on these two vital Irish language programmes for post-primary schools. We anticipate Guth na hÉigse  and Duais Bashō Haiku Poetry Competition to support the development and joy of the spoken and written word in Irish over the years to come”.

Duais Bashō Haiku Poetry Competition asks post-primary students to compose a haiku in the English or Irish language or a hybrid and submit their haiku for adjudication by 24 October 2022. The haiku is the shortest poetic form in the world which originated in Japan in the 17th Century, first refined and championed by haiku master Bashō. Haiku poems are usually written in three lines and contain a maximum of seventeen syllables. Poet, playwright, haikuist and member of Aosdána, Gabriel Rosenstock will adjudicate.

Jane O’Hanlon, Education Officer for Poetry Ireland, said “Guth na hÉigse and Duais Basho are designed to offer participants the opportunity to engage with Poetry and the Irish Language through accessible, and hopefully fun encounters, that will enhance their understanding and confidence.  Taking part in the wider IMRAM Festival is, therefore, a really important part of this experience.”

Both pilot initiatives aim to support Irish language development in schools by introducing an exciting and accessible programme, establishing a positive learning campaign focused on the Irish language as an interactive language that can be effectively spoken and written with confidence and enjoyment.

Entries are now open for both competitions.

The deadline for Guth na hÉigse entries is 4 October 2022.
The deadline for Duais Bashō Haiku Poetry Competition haiku submissions is 24 October 2022.

Irish language Press Release:

Beocht a chur le Ghaeilge scríofa agus labhartha le haghaidh iar-bhunscoileanna

I gcomhar le hIMRAM, tá dhá thionscnamh nua spreagúla seolta ag Éigse Éireann a bhfuil sé mar aidhm acu an Ghaeilge a spreagadh mar chuid dá gclár iar-bhunscoile. Is comórtas píolótach trí Ghaeilge é Guth na hÉigse. Mar chuid de Guth na hÉigse tá Comórtas Labhartha Filíochta agus Comórtas Duais Bashō Haiku, comórtas haiku Béarla agus Gaeilge.

Tá na comórtais oscailte anois agus tá Poetry Ireland agus IMRAM ag iarraidh ar gach múinteoir iar-bhunscoile a gcuid daltaí a bheith páirteach.

Is comórtas píolótach Comórtas Labhartha Filíochta d’Iarbhunscoileanna é Guth na hÉigse, atá bunaithe ar an gComórtas Labhairt Filíochta, Poetry Aloud, atá an-rath air. Chuir Leabharlann Náisiúnta na hÉireann agus Éigse Éireann tús le Poetry Aloud in 2007. Tá sé mar aidhm ag Guth na hÉigse mic léinn a spreagadh ar fud oileán na hÉireann chun dánta Gaeilge a fhoghlaim de ghlanmheabhair agus ansin na dánta a rá os ard ag babhtaí ceannais, cluichí ceannais réigiúnacha agus ag craobh náisiúnta a bheidh ar siúl i mí na Samhna mar chuid d’Fhéile Litríochta Gaeilge IMRAM 2022.

Dúirt Liam Carson, Stiúrthóir Fhéile Litríochta Gaeilge 2022 IMRAM, "Tá lúcháir orainn a bheith ag comhoibriú le hÉigse Éireann ar an dá chlár ríthábhachtacha Gaeilge seo d’iar-bhunscoileanna. Tá súil againn go dtacóidh Guth na hÉigse agus Comórtas Filíochta Duais Bashō Haiku le forbairt teanga agus sult a bhaint as an nGaeilge a úsáid mar theanga labhartha agus scríofa sna blianta amach romhainn”.

Fáiltíonn Comórtas Filíochta Duais Bashō Haiku roimh dhaltaí iar-bhunscoile haiku a chumadh, i mBéarla nó i nGaeilge nó go dátheangach, agus a gcuid haiku a chur isteach le haghaidh breithiúnais faoin 24 Deireadh Fómhair 2022.

Is é an haiku an fhoirm fhileata is giorra ar domhan a tháinig chun cinn sa tSeapáin sa 17ú hAois, cruthaithe ar dtús ag an máistir haiku Bashō. Scríobhtar dánta Haiku i dtrí líne de ghnáth agus tá seacht siolla déag ar a mhéad iontu. Is é an file, drámadóir, scríbhneoir haiku agus ball d’Aosdána, Gabriel Rosenstock a bheidh i mbun moltóireachta.

Dúirt Jane O’Hanlon, Oifigeach Oideachais le haghaidh Éigse Éireann, "Is deis ar leith é Guth na hÉigse agus Duais Basho do rannpháirtithe óga dul i ngleic leis an bhFilíocht agus leis an nGaeilge ar bhealach nuálach taitneamhach. Tá súil againn go gcuirfidh sé seo le tuiscint na daoine óga ar an teanga agus lena muinín in úsáid na Gaeilge. Is cuid fíor-thábhachtach den taithí seo é páirt a ghlacadh i bhFéile IMRAM, rud a bhfuilimid ag tnúth go mór leis".

Tá sé mar aidhm ag an dá thionscnamh píolótach tacú le forbairt na Gaeilge i scoileanna trí chlár spreagúil a chur ar fáil agus feachtas foghlama dearfach a bhunú dírithe ar an nGaeilge mar theanga beo inár féidir sult a bhaint as an Ghaeilge a labhairt agus a scríobh go héifeachtach agus le bród.

Tá iontrálacha oscailte anois don dá chomórtas.

Is é an 4 Deireadh Fómhair 2022 an spriocdháta d’iontrálacha Guth na hÉigse agus leanann an spriocdháta do Chomórtas Filíochta Duais Bashō Haiku ina dhiaidh sin ar an 24 Deireadh Fómhair 2022.

Tá foirmeacha iontrála agus sonraí don dá chomórtas ar fáil ar www.poetryireland.ie / Guth na hÉigse anseoChomórtas Filíochta Duais Bashō Haiku anseo.
