We Are The Poets inspires young people to express themselves through poetry

4th March 2020

Poetry Ireland is delighted to be a part of We Are The Poets, a two-year project inspiring young people to express themselves through poetry and verse.

Commencing in January 2020, We Are the Poets brings poets working with the Writers in Schools scheme to post-primary schools across Galway city and county.

During a poetry residency, the writers work alongside young people to inspire and help them create poems on the themes of landscape, language and migration.

Schools were invited to participate in a series of short residencies in which students work with the specially selected poetry team including poets Pete Mullineaux, Ger Mills, Máire Holmes, Elaine Feeney, Luke Morgan, Ger Hanberry and Jackie MacDonncha to explore the world of poetry, to write and speak their own poetry.

Each participating school is encouraged and supported to create a special Poetry Day Ireland event during April 2020, during which each school’s resident poet and We Are The Poets participants will read/perform their poems. Events will also be taking in several libraries in Galway.

Supported by Poetry Ireland, Laureate na nÓg, Children's Books Ireland, Galway 2020, Galway Public Libraries, Ealaín na Gaeltachta and GRETB.
