Session Details

Initial discussion about the ingredients that are part of a novel, like setting, character, plot, dialogue, theme, conflict and resolution of conflict.  Using Dangerous Games, I would discuss how I combined all the ingredients in telling the story.  I would also spend time looking at examples of good openings to novels that draw on some of those ingredients to pull the reader very quickly into the story (Holes, Lord of The Flies, Goodnight Mister Tom, Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone, We Come Apart by Sarah Crossan and Brian Conaghan).

For a creative writing workshop, I would use a pupil generated piece of dialogue as an easy way to stimulate a group into creating their own pieces of writing.

For a poetry class in a primary school setting I would introduce a poem and discuss how and why it works before using it as a jump off point for pupils to write their own poems.  I would also like to introduce poems that can be dramatized or used to inspire a piece of art so that the poetry experience can be enhanced.

I am also very open to discussing with teachers any particular area of the English curriculum that they might like my input on.
