Publications/Repertoire/Productions & Background Experience
I have four full collections of poetry published: The Shadow Keeper (Salmon Poetry 1997) Dangerous Dresser (Bradshaw Books 2005) Lovely Legs (Salmon 2009) and Merman (Salmon 2012). I also have two chapbooks, Reach, 2004 and Working the Flow, 1992, both by Lapwing Publications. My work explores the major themes of family and personal relationships broadening out to encompass the wider world of historical and contemporary events. My work can sometimes have a light and playful top note with a much more serious undercurrent. My poems have been widely published in magazines and journals, and broadcast many times on RTÉ Radio: The Arts Show and Sunday Miscellany and local and community radio. I have won a number of awards including; The Fish International Poetry Award and the highly prestigious Arvon International Poetry Award (UK) and been Highly Commended and placed in many others.
I am a graduate of the Trinity College Creative Writing Programme and was a founding member of the celebrated Dublin Writers' Workshop. I have been involved in teaching creative writing (including poetry and short story) to both adults and children for many years. I have taken part in numerous public readings both in Ireland and abroad and given workshops in The Irish Writers' Centre, County Councils, Schools, Libraries, prisons and have worked with the Travelling Community.
View Sample of Work
I prefer to work with groups of 12-15 if I am running a creative workshop. I know this is not always possible. With large groups I prefer to do a reading with a question and answer session, some writing by the pupils can be included in this. Where participants bring their own work to sessions, either poetry or short stories, a smaller group works better and this is often suited to transition year.
Age Group Details
Primary School - 5th and 6th class. Post Primary School - I prefer first and second year or transition year, but have dealt with almost all age groups.
Mornings and afternoons suit, I can be fairly flexible.
