Publications/Repertoire/Productions & Background Experience
I'm a poet, and have had 2 collections of poetry published: Encounter (Lapwing 2010) and The Wild Pupil (Bradshaw 2012). I've also had poems and flash fiction published in various literary journals in Ireland and further afield.
I'm an experienced youth worker with the Child and Family Agency so am very comfortable in challenging situations or with young people who have emotional or behavioural difficulties in school. I've been teaching creative writing to people of all ages for years, and am especially interested in removing fear and encouraging excitement and pride in participants when it comes to creative writing.
I prefer to work with groups of 15 or less but can work with whole classes - there just isn't as much opportunity for everyone to participate fully. I generally work with the group to arrange the classroom so that we're all sitting in a 'round table' arrangement. I usually open my sessions with some mindful breathing and a few minutes' private 'free-writing', and then gauge the group to see which approach to take. My sessions range from quite involved peer critique and discussion about writing to group story-sharing work with a minimum of actual writing and reading, depending on ability. I use a mixture of fun and challenging exercises and place emphasis on sharing work, encouraging praise and support for each other and feeling that you can say what you feel without criticism or judgement. The exercises are a mix of poetry, fiction and whatever-you-want-it-to-be, and we discuss exercises, questions and anything else that comes up in between.
