Publications/Repertoire/Productions & Background Experience
Born in Dublin in 1956, Kevin worked for many years as a teacher of English. As a teacher educator, he has visited many post-primary schools around the country and facilitated workshops for teachers and pre-service teachers of English.
Kevin has completed residencies in schools in Dublin, Kilkenny and Clare. From 2016-2018, he was writer-in-residence with the City of Dublin ETB. Kevin is an Arts Council Literature Bursary awardee, and a Fulbright-Creative Ireland Professional Fellowship Scholar.
Kevin writes in a variety of forms. He has written six novels for Young Adults. In Pieces, was written with eight, second-year students from Trinity Comprehensive, Ballymun. The sequel, Mary’s Shadow, was written during his residency with the CDETB, and the third part of the trilogy, Rollercoaster was written during a residency with four JCSP libraries. Apart from novels, he loves writing for radio. RTE have produced two of his plays, a short story as well as features and a documentary. Over the years his scripts have featured on Sunday Miscellany. Kevin also dips in and out of poetry and has written a few screenplays.
Kevin has compiled and edited numerous anthologies and textbooks for post-primary English. For many years he was editor of the Teaching English magazine.
Publications include Rollercoaster (Little Island, 2020), Mary’s Shadow (Little Island, 2018), In Pieces (JCSP, 2013), Valentina (Little Island, 2012), Watching Angels (Marino, 2000) and A Master of the Sultan (Poolbeg Press, 1997).
Session Details
I like to liaise with teachers and see what suits their needs. For an introductory visit I am happy to mix some reading from my work with a writing workshop and a question-and-answer session. I enjoy doing longer writing workshops with students. I believe that all children can write and can enjoy the success of writing. For me, the key is breaking down the writing into manageable stages.
Age Group Details
The novels I have written work well for the 12-16 age group. I am happy to do workshops with the 12-18 age group.
