Held sessions in libraries in various parts of the country as part the Children's Book Festival each year from 2009 to present day. Helped children in local schools write plays for Scór na nÓg from 2006-2012 Held writing workshops in local schools since 2011. Read in bookshops as part of World Book Day from 2009 to present day.   

Session Details

For reading and Q&A session, children at their desks or grouped around in a circle is fine, whichever is most convenient for the teacher. All I require is a table and a glass of water. There is no requirement for the children to have read any of my work, but it makes the session flow a little better if there are some prepared questions on the writing process etc. For workshops, it's best if the children are grouped in fours, with each group having at least one person who is confident reading or speaking for the group. These sessions can be adapted to cover material/ areas as required by the teacher, but in general I focus on story structure, developing characters and plot, making the writing dynamic, and editing and rewriting the work.

Age Group Details

Preferred age group: 9-12 year olds. The reading and Q&A sessions generally work best for fifth and sixth class children (both boys and girls) as they interact best with the material and discussions. It can also work well if the fourth class is a book-loving class, but for that age group the writing workshop tends to be more productive.

At present, I'm available every Thursday and Friday, but can work on other days if given over a fortnight's advance notice.
