Publications/Repertoire/Productions & Background Experience

My writing covers poetry, drama, song writing, fiction & storytelling. I have been facilitating creative writing and drama workshops in schools for over 30 years. I have also facilitated a number of school residencies through the ‘Development Education through Literature’ project. Theatre productions for young people include: Charlotte & Her Dog, Cinders 2000 (a musical) Trust Games & Red Lorry Yellow Lorry (specially commissioned for the Cúirt Festival of Literature.) Three plays produced by RTE Radio – most recently Butterfly Wings (2011). Devised school productions have been performed at Babaró, Cúirt, Sonas & other arts/literature festivals. My first published poem - 'Harvest Festival', written aged 13, was included in Macmillan’s anthology Poetry & Song and recorded on ARGO records with music by Ewan MacColl & Peggy Seeger. Three poetry collections: Zen Traffic Lights, A Father’s Day & Session (which is all about Irish Traditional Music).  A new novel for children: Innocent Planet – combining science & science fiction, real & speculative history, will be published in 2015. I have also published three learning resources: Know Yourself – Know the World, (hard copy/DVD, Learning Horizons Education Company, Dublin) A Piece of the Cake, (a re-appraisal of the traditional ‘Little Red Hen’ story, exploring themes of fairness and tolerance) & Just a Second! Exploring Global Issues through Drama & Theatre (Afri 2015.)  I can work with all ages, from infants through to teenagers & adults. Aside from schools I am regularly invited to do readings and workshops by libraries, book shops and other venues for local & national events.

Session Details

For a typical one off session I mix poetry, storytelling song, with some drama, (& a few jokes.) The emphasis is on interaction participation. While this can be fun & entertaining, it is also very focused, structured & controlled. It can take place either in a hall or regular classroom & doesn’t involve disturbing chairs & desks. I can work with all ages, (including infants) in small groups, or with larger groups of several classes combined. Alternatively I can offer a more intensely focused drama session, if a suitable space is available. Another option is a creative writing session, looking at poems and/or stories, songs & plays. This will include getting started on an idea, structuring, scripting & developing a theme. I tend to focus on ideas the children offer, rather than just focusing on my own work. Take a look at one of Pete's typical school visits.
