Publications/Repertoire/Productions & Background Experience

My writing covers poetry, drama, song writing and fiction. I’ve been facilitating creative writing and drama workshops in schools for over 30 years, including numerous residencies for Poetry Ireland’s ‘Development Education through Literature’ project. Drama productions include Trust Games and Red Lorry Yellow Lorry (commissioned for the Cúirt Festival of Literature) and three plays produced by RTE Radio – including Butterfly Wings starring Owen Roe (2011). Devised school productions were performed at Babaró, Cúirt and Sonas arts/literature festivals. My first published poem 'Harvest Festival', written aged 13, was selected for a Macmillan anthology Poetry & Song and then recorded on ARGO records with music by Ewan MacColl & Peggy Seeger. I’ve published four poetry collections: Zen Traffic LightsA Father’s Day, Session and How to Bake a Planet (Salmon Poetry); also a number of learning resources, most recently Interdependence Day! Teaching the Sustainable Development Goals through Drama for All Ages (available from Afri/Action from Ireland: admin@afri.ie. A debut science fiction novel Jules & Rom: Sci-fi meets Shakespeare (Troubador Books UK) was published as an ebook in 2020 with the paperback to follow in 2021.

Session Details

I can work with pupils of all ages, from infants through to older teenagers.  During the Covid-induced lockdown I’ve been teaching online through Zoom, most recently in association with Tulca Arts Festival’s education programme and have adjusted my way of working to better suit that medium in terms of providing an engaging and inclusive session. I offer a mix of poetry, prose, song, drama – to inspire all-round creativity and with the emphasis on active participation. While this can be fun it is also focused, a typical session might include getting started on an idea, structuring and developing a theme. I can work around a pre-chosen theme (e.g. bio-diversity, climate change, local heritage) or respond to ideas emanating from the children during the session. I can also offer illustrations from my own work as a stimulus.
