Poetry Town Gets Underway!

10th September 2021

Poetry Town gets underway today (10 September) in 20 towns across the island of Ireland, celebrating the pride, strength and diversity of our towns.

With a blend of online and Covid compliant in-person events from 10-18 September, Poetry Town brings together the communities of each town to celebrate poetry in our everyday lives and surroundings.

All activities are free.

Check out Poetry Underfoot, Café and Chemist Poems, Poems that Move You, workshops, readings and much more! Close to 200 activities are available on the Poetry Town site

The Poet Laureate for each town will unveil their Town Poem, written for the town and its people, at a local flagship Poetry Town event on dates between 10-18 September.

Many of the Poetry Towns are also organising schools activities and facilitating community engagement projects.

Essential to the ethos of this project is ongoing collaboration between Poetry Ireland, Arts Offices, and local town communities and groups. The aim of Poetry Town is to create communal experiences that involve individuals, groups and artists in each town, and to present and promote exciting and ambitious work from people across a wide range of ages and backgrounds. Poetry Town celebrates the pride that we have in our towns, along with the strength, diversity and heritage that each town possesses.

Poetry Town is an initiative of Poetry Ireland in partnership with Local Authority Arts Offices and is made possible with funding from the Arts Council of Ireland’s Open Call funding, and is also supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

All of the activities can be found at poetrytown.ie and the hashtag is #PoetryTown. Make sure to get involved!
