Poetry Day Ireland takes place on Thursday 26 April 2018, and the theme is Poetry Surprises! Individuals, organisations and schools are invited to join in and celebrate. Whether you choose to organise an event, read a poetry book, write a poem or simply share lines from a poem you love on social media, don’t forget to share details and photos of your activities using the hashtags #PoetryDayIRL and #poetrysurprises. Read on for suggestions and inspiration to help you get started.
Plan an event
We welcome all events, big or small, and with our theme this year, surprising events are even better! You can find some help and advice on planning an event » here and you can also download our logos and posters to help promote it (coming soon).
Once you have confirmed your event » add it to our online calendar (events will be added to the site asap). Events submitted by 1 March 2018 will be included in the Poetry Day Ireland printed brochure. After that date, events will be added to the online calendar and press releases only.

Search our » What’s On calendar to find events and workshops taking place near you on Poetry Day Ireland. Many of the events planned each year are free, and if you’ve never been to a poetry reading before, you are likely to find it to be a relaxed and welcoming experience.
Read a poem
Take a few moments to read, enjoy or share some poetry on Poetry Day Ireland. Whether you're already an aficionado or just dipping your toe in, we’re sure you’ll find something that tickles your fancy in our selection of surprising poems and top poetry book picks that will be online very soon! Celebrate in School
Take a look at our » education pages for information on how to get your school involved with poetry on Poetry Day Ireland. We have ideas, lesson plans, and accompanying videos and posters in English and Irish to help spark the joy of poetry in your classroom. New education resources for 2018 will be online soon, but in the meantime you can use resources from previous years all year round.
Promote poetry in bookshops and libraries
Libraries and bookshops across the country will be marking Poetry Day Ireland with readings, workshops and other events. Drop into your local library or bookshop to see what’s in store.

Share a poem
This year, we’re inviting you to share a poem that surprises you by taking part in our Pocket Poems campaign. You can also share one of our poetry quotes postcards online (coming soon) with the hashtag #PoetryDayIRL, send someone you know a copy of our Surprising Poems ebook (coming soon), use chalk to write out your favourite lines of poems on the street, share a poem on your email footer or even think about how you might bring poetry into your workplace.
