Schools Awards in Mountmellick
 

As part of Poetry Town Mountmellick, Schools Awards took place, with primary and secondary school students invited to submit poems in six different categories. They could write a poem about their town, a local place, or a person from the area.  

Schools in the town were contacted with details of how the Awards work. Entries opened on 3 September and closed on 30 September.  

About the Awards 

Awards entries were judged anonymously. An independent adjudicator was appointed for each town who shortlisted the submissions, and Poetry Ireland made the final decisions on the awards.

Winners - Mountmellick

We're delighted to announce the winners in the Mountmellick Poetry Town School Awards:

• Andrew Senior (St. Paul’s National School - 3rd/4th class category) with his poem 'Journey Through Mountmellick'

Journey through Mountmellick - Andrew Senior

Mountmellick is where I go to school  
The Owenass River Walk is pretty cool. 

Cox’s Shop is on the square 
Nora’s bakery is also there. 

Number One Boutique where women shop 
McElwee’s Chemist is well worth a stop. 

Cocoa Couture-chocolate-yum, yum, 
Breda’s Gift Shop with treats for some. 

O’Horain’s Newsagent on the Main Street, 
A warm welcome at the Coffee Pot when you want to meet. 

Sparkles for dresses is well worth a look, 
The state of the art library is never short of a book. 

Irishtown Garden Centre for flowers and seeds,  
Glanbia will supply all hardware needs. 

With Frankie’s Hairdressers you’ll always be in style, 
The Paint Store will keep your house snazzy for a while. 

Yvonne’s Florist for a lovely bouquet, 
Dowling and Morris- great butchers I must say. 

Supervalu and Watchorns for your daily shop,   
Homesavers will even find you a mop, 

Three churches in the town for prayer, 
 try out the gymnastics if you dare. 

The Christmas tree on the square has lots of space,  
Mountmellick really is a wonderful place. 

O’Gormains for lots of stationery, 
Allsorts for many an accessory. 

No visit to Mountmellick is complete, 

Without a stop at the MDA for a Mountmellick work treat.

Let me take you on a journey through a town fast and slow, 
And I’ll tell you about the Mountmellick I know. 

Most days during the summer trying to keep fit, 
I’d fast walk around the town for a bit. 

Parking at Watchorne’s, our one stop shop, 
In for bread and milk we would pop. 

Out past the garda station towards Rev. Tim’s, 
Past the old graveyard and dog refuse bins. 

Hinches Garage is on our right, 
Filled with large lorries day and night. 

Past our dog’s vets, 
They’re really good with pets. 

And out to the long wide Main Street, 
If you’re looking for magazines, milkshakes, 
sweets O’Gormans just can’t be beat. 

On to the Credit Union across from the theatre, 
In pre covid times I remember people I’d meet there. 

Almost there at the 4 kilometre mark, 
We round the bend for school and the park. 

In summer time the weather’s fine but soon it will be cool, 
Up the old street past the masons hall with many a rule. 

I marvel at the glass, 
Nora’s cake shop calls to me it’s a shame to pass. 

Back down Main Street, almost there, 
Turn left to our favourite spot and we are at a tear. 

Mountmellick’s magnificent library is our next spot 
With their craft bags, reading stars the lot! 

Back to the car it’s always a race 
Now its time to go to our home place. 

But I know I’ll be back tomorrow, 
To walk around the Mountmellick that I know

Mointeach Milic is so cool, 
Owenass River is beside our school.  
Up the road is O’ Connell Square  
Nora’s coffee shop is in there. 
The Christmas tree is so tall  
Merry Christmas to you all.  
Embroidery is a hobby here  
Loved by all, far and near. 
Lots of things I like to do 
In the Macra Hall with you.  
Come and see our lovely town  
Kind and gentle all around.
