Fees-free Poetry Workshop for the Economically Disadvantaged

The Munster Literature Centre is offering a poetry workshop series for the economically disadvantaged. Individuals who identify as working-class, minority ethnic, disabled and LGBTQIA are especially welcome to apply for places, although places may not be offered exclusively to such candidates. Applicants must be unwaged, with no income, or receiving social welfare payments.

Aside from the above conditions, an eligible candidate must have published a poem on at least two occasions in a poetry/literary journal. They must be over 18 years of age. They must be actually resident in Munster (not merely be able to provide a Munster address). The working language of the workshops will be English. On offer is a series of six, weekly, 90 minute, Zoom-delivered, workshops beginning in February. Applicants will need a good internet connection to participate. Workshops will be on a week-day evening on six consecutive weeks 7.00-8.30pm.

Industry average tuition fees of €120-€250 will be waived but successful candidates will be expected to subscribe to Southword (at a cost of €20). Participants will receive complementary copies of two issues of the literary journal Cyphers (valued at €14) and two recent collections of poetry (valued at €25). A maximum of eight places are on offer.

The six workshops will be on the following topics:

1) Purging clichés and heightening the music of language in your poems.

2) Revising first drafts, with examples by Seamus Heaney and others.

3) Generating new poems by ekphrasis.

4) Writing the persona poem.

5) Exploration of a number of different exercises and strategies for generating new poems.

6) Awareness of the literary marketplace, the preparation of manuscripts and submissions.

Applicants must submit six of their best poems and a biographical note/ literary CV which fits on one page, and complete the accompanying form. Read through the form before completing your documents for upload. Deadline for applications December 15th 2021.
