'Writing for Children (for adult writers)'

This will be a proactive three-hour workshop where participants will be taught real and practical methods of writing for children, as well as essential plotting techniques with the established writer John W. Sexton. The plotting method covered in the workshop is designed not only for novel and short-story writing, but also for the creation of fictional series, one of the most common formats in children’s and YA publishing. Participants will also receive tips for placing their work on the market, encompassing radio, magazine and novel publishing. The emphasis will be on fiction, but poetry outlets will also be looked at.

John W. Sexton is a highly experienced children’s writer and created and wrote the children’s science fiction comedy drama The Ivory Tower for RTE radio, which ran to over one hundred half-hour episodes from 1999 to 2002, and gained a large following amongst both children and adults.
His novels based on this series, The Johnny Coffin Diaries and Johnny Coffin School-Dazed are both published by The O’Brien Press, and have been translated into Italian and Serbian. He is a regular contributor to The Caterpillar, the Irish journal of poetry and story for children.
He is one of the most requested writers on the Irish Writers in Schools Scheme, which is administered for the Arts Council by Poetry Ireland.
